Truck
damages historic
Emmit House property
Brick
stairs and a side porch outside the 1879 Emmit
House on West Main Street, Emmitsburg, were
heavily damaged May 1 around 1:30 p.m. when
this Thurmont Cooperative truck slammed into
the yard. The driver, Charles Etchison, 21,
Smithsburg, sustained minor injuries. Etchison
told The Dispatch he did not know
how he lost control of the vehicle. No charges
had been filed by press deadline.

Two
former
commission-
ers sworn
into office
EMMITSBURG,
Md. – Two former commissioners, Joyce Rosensteel and
Clifford Sweeney, victorious candidates in the April 25 town
election, were sworn into office May 1, expanding the board
of commissioners for the first time to five members.
Rosensteel
received 232 votes; Sweeney 220; and candidate Catherine Forrence
received 122 votes. The election board posted a count of 310
ballots.

Comp plan could be done by end of year
EMMITSBURG, Md. – Newly hired town planning consultant
Christopher N. Jakubiak told planning commission members April
24 that with “fairly aggressive” work the comprehensive
plan could be completed by the end of this year.
Effective
immediately, the much-delayed comprehensive plan revision
will be added to every planning commission meeting agenda
until completed, which could also mean holding more than
one meeting a month.

Dispatch
writers capture press awards
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Members of The Dispatch staff
and two contributing writers were honored at the MDDC (Maryland-Delaware-District
of Columbia) Press Association awards ceremony held in Annapolis
on April 28.
The
Dispatch entered articles in the editorial competition
for the first time this year, competing in Division F, non-dailies
under 10,000 circulation. With approximately 53 newspapers
in that division, The Emmitsburg Dispatch ranked
in the top half of small, non-dailies.
In
the Continuing Coverage category, Emmitsburg News Editor
Rick Fulton, along with contributing writer Chris Patterson,
captured first place honors for the “Emmitsburg Ethics
Investigation,” which began in 2004 and continued
in 2005. The judges summed up the work by saying, »
