Md. – March 26 was Staff Sergeant Chris Alley’s
day off. He wanted to catch some sun by the pool
in Baghdad. What he caught instead was shrapnel.
“I heard a whistling and that isn’t
a good thing in Iraq!” Alley wrote in a
letter to Emmitsburg.net. “I immediately
flipped the chair over my body just in time for
the impact of a 107mm rocket about 30 meters (35
yards) from my spot. The impact was a bit deafening
and I saw the dirt and shrapnel hitting the pool
water. It was then quiet so I got up and started
running for cover about 40 meters away.”

Town
had 53% jump in crime in 2006
EMMITSBURG,
Md. – Serious crime in Emmitsburg increased more than
50 percent last year, according to a state report.
The Crime in Maryland: 2006 Uniform Crime Report is an
annual report that looks at crime in Maryland at a state,
county and municipal level. Serious crime is considered
as murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, breaking or
entering, larceny theft and motor vehicle theft.
According to the report, Emmitsburg’s crime rate
increased 53 percent between 2005 and 2006 or 44 incidents
up from 29.
“Crime
throughout the county was up 12 percent,” said Frederick
County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins. “Emmitsburg is not unique

Thurmont P&Z won't recommend Myers annexation
THURMONT, Md. – One vote can make a difference. Thurmont
Planning and Zoning Commissioner Randy Cubbedge supported recommending
to the Thurmont Mayor and Commissioners the annexation of the
Myers Farm north of town. However, when he left the July 26
planning and zoning meeting to pick up his family at the airport,
Commission Alternate Sabrina Massett became a voting member.
Her vote against recommending annexation led to the 2-1-1 decision
by the commission not to recommend annexation to the town commissioners.
“I
think it shows it’s not a cut-and-dry issue by any standard,”
said Tom Hudson, who is seeking to develop the Myers Farm.
“If anything, I think it was a split decision last night.”

vote came after the planning and zoning commission heard public
