Typo
yields more than $20,000 for Emmitsburg
EMMITSBURG,
Md. – Rather than having to worry over what to cut from
their 2008 budget, the Emmitsburg town commissioners spent much
of a recent budget review deciding how to spend an additional
$20,295 found in the budget.
“There
was a typo made in the parking meter income, it should have
been $22,250, the zero was left off at the end, meaning a
net increase of $20,295 is in the budget,” Mayor James
Hoover said.
The Dispatch
Community Newspapers discovered the and brought it to Hoover’s
attention. The typo created an opportunity for the commissioners
to have their say in where the extra money should be spent.
Commission
President Chris Staiger proposed two ideas on how to spend

Circus causes commissioner controversy
EMMITSBURG,
Md. – The Kelly Miller Circus may be coming to town,
but not without opposition.
At the May 21 Town Meeting commissioner William O’Neil
let everyone know that he will not support the circus nor
attend it because of one thing- animal cruelty.
“In
all good conscious I can’t support the circus. I don’t
think it’s right to basically underwrite or support
enterprises that do abuse animals,” O’Neil said.
“And circuses have had many problems in the past, including
this specific circus, Kelly Miller Circus.”

Take a walk through Emmitsburg's 200-year history
EMMITSBURG,
Md. – When the Great Emmitsburg Fire began two weeks
before the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, it started in a stable
that was, at the time located where Elias Lutheran Church
now stands. The flames rushed down Main Street destroying
a good many buildings in the town.
On June 30 during the annual Community Day Celebration, people
will gather on the parking lot of Elias Lutheran Church and
begin their own journey through town that will include learning
more about the fire. The Greater Emmitsburg Area Historical
Society, in conjunction with the Emmitsburg Lions Club, will
be sponsoring two historical walking tours of the town.
The tours will begin at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Elias Lutheran
Church parking lot. The tours will last about 90 minutes and
make 20 stops as the group walks up one side of West Main
